On Dream Stopping

When I was in my late twenties I researched techniques in astral projection and lucid dreaming. Later in my mid thirties, while living alone in a remote wilderness area, I developed a technique for entering a lucid dream state. I call my method: “Stopping the dream.”

How it is achieved –

When we say; “fall asleep,” what does that really mean? When we “fall” into a sleep state from the state of being “awake,” we pass from one state of consciousness to another, from “awake” to “asleep.” What one may not be clear on is that there are actually four states of consciousness we experience when “falling” asleep. There is the “waking state” (Beta/Gamma above 15Htz). There is the “relaxed state” (Alpha 12-15Htz).  There is an “in between state” of consciousness between the “relaxed state” and the “sleep state.” This is the “state of reverie” (Theta 8-12Htz.). Then the final state of consciousness is the “sleep state” (Delta 1-8Htz). As we “fall” asleep, we pass through three states of consciousness, before entering the final state of sleep.

It is in that fine split of transition between the state of reverie, the “in between state” or theta consciousness and the “sleep state” or delta consciousness, that it is possible to stop oneself from actually entering into an unconscious dream state.  If one can recognize this transition, when it is happening, one can consciously “stop” oneself from falling into a “sleep state.” If we can remain conscious of this fine transition we will still “fall asleep” but yet, still remain “conscious” to the fact that we are asleep. Thus, this allows one to enter a “dream state” consciously, with an awareness of knowing they are in the “dream state.” I call this “stopping the dream.”

Once one has trained them self to enter into a lucid dream state, the challenge is then, how long it is possible to remain in this lucid state. This is where the real practice comes in!
